In Autumn 2019, the Avaus project organizes an open lecture series on topics related to cultural diversity. The series of three lectures is part of the Diversity Agent Course carried out by Culture for All Service, Globe Art Point and the Center for Cultural Policy Research Cupore in 2019. The events are open and free of charge to everyone interested. The language is English.

Dr. Faith Mkwesha – Decolonising Fear (lecture and discussion)

This session will focus on the colonial creation of fear of the other and how that fear has colonised people. We will

also, discuss how the politics of fear is sustained, and weaponised by different actors to perpetuate racism, prejudices and discrimination. The second part will focus on unconscious bias, and how we can free our selves from fear and unconscious bias. The aim is to raise the consciousness of cultural agents to see the expert from a multicultural perspective and expand the pool of creatives and human resources.

Dr. Faith Mkwesha is a literature and culture scholar from a post-colonial, decolonial, intersectional feminism and gender perspectives. She is a researcher and lecturer at Helsinki University, Swedish School of Social Sciences, CEREN Department, and Gender Studies, Abo Akademi University. She is the founder and director of Sahwira Africa International NGO where she does her activism on racism, anti-racism and representation campaigns. She is also co-ordinating a multicultural and multiracial youth project. They also conduct workshops and seminars on African literature and culture, Decolonising the mind, Diversity and inclusion, Race and racism and Gender in Africa. She worked in Zimbabwe and South Africa Universities. She is a mother of five and glammy granny to her grandson.
