Moncayo Paula

In my work I explore the coalition between artistic practice and the practices traditionally assigned to women in domestic spaces. I see labour rooted in tenderness and care as universal heritage that has been historically undermined and must be uplifted. I base my artistic research in family archive and in relational experiences that I’ve gained as an Ecuadorian woman. I choose illustration, installation and performance as mediums to give new meaning to domestic labour, not forgetting it’s role as a form of confinement and oppression; but shining light on it’s potential to be a tool for collective empowerment. Affection, reliance, and tenderness are ways of resisting in an exclusionary and violent environment. Paula Moncayo (Ecuador, 1999) is a visual artist and illustrator graduated in Universidad San Francisco de Quito. In her conceptual artwork, she analyzes inequality through the reframing of traditionally feminine practices. Her work incorporates techniques that combine painting, illustration, and digital 3D modeling. She was nominated to the emerging artist prize “Premio Brasil”, organized by the Brazilian embassy in Ecuador. She has completed a year long internship as a professors aide for the Comic and Sequential arts class in USFQ and now works as a freelance illustrator.
