Aoi Yoshizawa

Aoi Yoshizawa is a Helsinki-based artist and textile designer engaged in the experimental process of applying traditional craft techniques to contemporary textile practice. Her artistic practice is particularly motivated by the repetitive actions, mechanisms and slow processes of hand weaving. In recent years she has been working on the project I AM A WEAVER, exploring antique hand weaving techniques and reinterpreting them into loom installations; revealing the creative process counter to industrial efficiency. Yoshizawa works in the artist's house on the island of Harakka and is part of the artist collective Harakka Collective and the experimental archipelago band Velvet Ass. She was recently artist in residence at the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York and at the Helsinki International Artist Programme in Suomenlinna. Originally from Japan, she has lived in the Nordic countries since 2006 and holds an MA from Aalto University (2015) and a BFA from the Bergen National Academy of Arts (2011).
