João Luís Matos Lopes

João Luís was born and raised in Porto, Portugal. After studying at the Porto Music Conservatory (1996-2010) and architecture (2008-2010), he decided to pursue a musical career in 2010, starting his studies at the Lisbon School of Music (2010-2015). He moved to Finland in 2016, where he expanded his skills through various professional experiences. In 2023, João completed a Master's degree in Music at the Sibelius Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki, where he honed his musical talents and became involved in the local music scene. With over 10 years of teaching experience, his commitment to music education and community engagement is evident through his work as a percussion teacher at Orquestra Geração (el Sistema Portugal) from 2014 to 2016, at TEMPO Orkesteri (el Sistema Finland) from 2016 to 2019, and as a drum teacher at the International School of Music, Helsinki (ISM). João also co-facilitated workshops/masterclasses on musical creation, collaborating with local communities in La Ligua, Petorca, Chile (with the support of Greenpeace Chile), and in Brazil, as an integral part of his Global Music course. Currently, João Luís is a percussionist, improviser, and global musician, developing his skills in performance, composition, and music production. He primarily plays multi-percussion, vibraphone, and bass drums, has explored electro-acoustic instruments, and experimented with his voice to create a unique sonic identity. João is a featured artist at AWE - Artists With Evidence.
