I am Uliana Novak, a self-taught artist of Russian origin based in Finland since 2010. For many years I worked as a sociologist, earning a PhD degree from the University of Warsaw in 2004. My scientific work revolved around studying different social phenomena and analysing cultural and social shifts. So, for a long time, I used words as a verbal way of describing social reality. Since 2022, painting became my primary focus, and I have come to see myself as first and foremost an artist. The process of finding myself through art coincided with significant global changes, first COVID-19, and then the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This was a significant driving factor for me to rethink the nature of the social, and from now I want to speak about this in the nonverbal language of art.
