Maya Kubinova was born in Eastern Europe during the era of socialism. She left Slovakia after the velvet revolution and after traveling and working in different European countries she now lives and works in Helsinki, Finland. She had studied in Amsterdam at Gerrit Rietveld Academy and finished with master degree in photography in Prague. Her main medium is film photography.
Her main interest is human. Its inner workings and often inexplicable existence. She uses natural and man-made environments as a backdrop for a naked human body. Through bodily gestures and interaction of the objects/body she creates intriguing stories that can be read as poetry or visual haikus. Photos are often presented in monumental size where the details work as stepping stones for cyclic reflection.
