Empowering Youth Through Art
About the Project
GAP LAB NEIGHBOURHOODS is an initiative by Globe Art Point (GAP) that brings inclusive art and culture courses to children and young people in Helsinki’s suburban regeneration areas. The project begins in Meri-Rastila and focuses on creating opportunities for creativity, learning, and community connection.
This program is designed for children aged 7 to 12 and youth aged 13 to 16. It offers free, accessible activities that encourage self-expression and cultural participation while reducing barriers to engagement.
Why It Matters
In Meri-Rastila, many families face socio-economic challenges, and participation in hobbies is below the city average. GAP LAB NEIGHBOURHOODS responds to this need by providing high-quality art education that is welcoming and inclusive.
The goals of the project are:
- Encourage cultural participation and prevent social exclusion
- Build confidence and personal agency among young people
- Introduce art as a potential career path
- Strengthen community ties through collaboration with schools and local partners
What We Offer
Starting in November 2025, GAP will launch two weekly courses at Kulttuuritila Merirasti, a trusted community venue in Meri-Rastila:
- Visual Arts and Comics for children aged 7 to 12
About the Course:
The Visual Arts & Comics Lab is a bilingual (Finnish & English), hands-on art experience where imagination, storytelling, and teamwork come to life!
Through comics, drawing, collage, clay, photography, and even short films, children will learn to express their ideas both visually and in words.
Led by two professional artists and art teachers, the course encourages creativity, collaboration, and confidence , helping kids see that art can be a joyful way to connect, co-create, and dream big.
- Urban Arts and Culture for youth aged 13 to 16
About the Course:
Discover and explore the vibrant world of visual art and urban culture in this bilingual (English & Finnish) creative and interactive course. Through painting, collage, and drawing, we will delve into inspiring ideas from art history, philosophy, fashion, music, and pop culture, connecting creativity with the world around us.
